Psychology
Psychology is the study of behaviour and how the mind works which involves a different approach in that it relies heavily on empirical (experimental) data and draws on a variety of academic disciplines, specifically biology, English, and mathematics.
The chosen specification is the AQA specification B which offers a very contemporary range of psychological topics. The specification has been designed to develop breadth of knowledge and an appreciation of the relationship between different aspects of the subject. This encourages students to take a broad view of Psychology by covering all core areas over 2 years (AS/A2), whilst allowing for the study of some of the core areas in greater depth in A2. The specification chosen lays an appropriate foundation for further study of Psychology or related subjects in higher education but also provides a worthwhile course for those entering the world of business or wishing to enter education or other professions in which social relationships are important.
A wide range of resources are used in the teaching of this subject which allow students to learn psychology through their own practical experimentation rather than relying on more traditional teaching styles. We believe that this ‘learning by doing’ approach has contributed to a continuously climbing standard of results. Last year (summer 2009) 41% of our students received an A grade in A-Level psychology compared to the national average of 19%.
The Scheme of Assessment has a modular structure and exams are taken in January and June at both AS and A2 levels.
