Music

Music is a vital and integral part of school life at Blue Coat. Our Music College status has supported us in building up a vibrant, well-equipped department offering a variety of opportunities for students. Both in and out of school hours there are many opportunities for music making and the study of music to a very high standard.
Lessons at Key Stage 3 are thoroughly practical and are based on performance and composition, aural discrimination and self-assessment skills. Singing is also an important activity. We offer a very wide range of learning opportunities in both Kay Stages 4 and 5. The range of courses we offer include GCSE Music, A-level Music and A-level Music Technology. This range allows students the opportunity to study a wide variety of musical genres whilst at the same time pursuing their own interests and projects.
We have links with other schools in Coventry. This helps us support music learning throughout the city. The department is also an integral part of the school’s Christian ethos, providing opportunities for students to contribute to the spiritual side of Blue Coat through worship bands, the Blue Coat School Choir and gospel choir.
All Blue Coat pupils across the years have access to the department’s excellent ICT facilities. In all main classrooms there are Apple Macs, which are programmed with the latest software such as Sibelius and Logic.
Blue Coat music department offers students a wealth of extra curricular activities. These include Concert, Wind and String Bands, Senior Strings group, Jazz Band, Drumestra (World music percussion group), Recorder group, Music Technology Recording club, amongst others. These offer pupils the chance to explore, perform and experience different kinds of music. The music department heavily subsidies the cost of instrumental lessons for pupils, through the support of governors, PAS and Standards Fund.
The Coventry Blue Coat Choir is a SATB choir with a national reputation, especially for its liturgical performances in cathedrals around the country and abroad. The choir have been involved in many BBC ‘daily service’ recordings and in 2008 they won the Songs of Praise Choir of the Year. Membership by audition is open to students of all ages from 11 to 18.
